  Functional magnetic resonance imaging

Functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, is a technique which is used to study brain areas which become active when the subject undertakes a particular task. Whilst structural MRI is used to study brain anatomy, fMRI is used to study brain function.
 
Historical Background
The development of fMRI during the 1990s was pioneered by Seiji Ogawa and Ken Kwong. Since then fMRI has found clinical application in pre-surgical planning (to localise brain function)...
